Undergraduate Mathematics
Competitions
Every year various universities run mathematics competitions (with prizes)
for undergraduates. Below are two we know about that run each year.
Sydney University Mathematics Society (SUMS) Problem Competition
This competition is open to all undergraduates at any Australian university
or tertiary institution. Prizes ($60 book vouchers from the Co-op Bookshop)
are awarded for the best correct solution to each of the 10 problems.
Entries from fourth year students are considered. When prizewinners are
being selected, if two or more solutions to a problem are essentially equal,
then preference may be given to the students in the earlier year of university.
The details of where to send your solutions are with the
2008 problems. Also check the SUMS site for problems with
solutions from previous years' competitions.
This year's competition closes on Friday 5 September, 2008.
The Blakers Mathematics Competition
The
School of Mathematics and Statistics, UWA awards $300 in prizes
for the
Blakers
Mathematics Competition. The competition is open to
all undergraduates in all Universities in Western Australia. Prizes are offered
for the best overall solutions from each of first, second and third year
students, as well as for elegant solutions to particular problems. You don't
have to solve all the problems to win prizes. You can review Competition
Problems and Solutions from previous years by visiting the
Blakers Mathematics Competition website.
The details of where to send your solutions are with
this year's problems.
This year's competition
opened on Friday 30 May, 2008 and
closes Monday 28 July, 2008.
