Epsilon: Curtin Mathematics and Statistics Society

The Greek letter epsilon is commonly used in mathematics to represent a small, arbitrary, positive quantity.

Epsilon is a student run academic club that aims to provide Curtin Mathematics students with a strong grounding for their undergraduate and postgraduate studies. All students of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics are automatically members of Epsilon.

Objectives

The primary focus of the society is to help mathematics students achieve their academic goals:

  1. Helping students with coursework (through Maths Clinics).
  2. Helping students gain information about their department (Newsletters and Orientation tours).
  3. Helping students gain a voice in the department (Year representatives).
  4. Helping students to get to know each other (Common room).
  5. Helping students with their careers (Careers seminars).
  6. Helping students to develop professionally (postgraduate and undergraduate level seminars).

Maths Clinic

The Maths Clinic is a place where all students can obtain help with their maths work, free of charge. Starting in 2005, there was a clinic run by maths department staff, and a clinic run by volunteer students and organised by SCUM (the first Curtin mathematics social club).

Year representatives

In 2007, Epsilon is starting as an unstructured club, with a representative from each year group (first – third, honours, postgraduate). Elections are held each year around the fourth week of Semester 1. The direction of the society and any activities it undertakes are completely at the discretion of the student representatives.

Associate Clubs

Epsilon was developed by SCUM members and other active members of the Curtin Mathematics department. Some of the Epsilon activities were initially run by SCUM. SCUM continues to be a Guild affiliated mathematics social club for Curtin students.

Epsilon was also developed in parallel with SAS – the Curtin Students' Actuarial Society. Epsilon is intended for all Curtin mathematics students, while SAS aims to provide services for Actuarial students only.
